The four stars are for readers using this for its intended purpose planning a hike section or thru of the PCT one of the three primo American long distance hiking trails While it would clearly be inadeuate for anyone who has already hiked the Trail they d probably be better served by the nature writings of William O Douglas or the rhapsodic musings of early Sierra pilgrim John Muir Berger does include a decent further reading section or as a guide book to stuff into one s pack either the data book for the weight conscious or one of the Schaeffer guides etc would be useful it works well as an intro and overview of this 2650 mile epicFor someone like me who is planning a thru hike this is the book to start with Berger takes the reader in a folksy only rarely too cutesy voice from the southern terminus to the Canadian border with each short chapter divided into sections of 130 miles or so with a brief overview of that section s highs and lows followed by interesting detail regarding human history wildlife and especially geology LOTS of geology The maps are basic at best and a shortcoming is the lack of visual detail to locate places mentioned in the text But it certainly got me excited about the forthcoming trip and along with Ray Jardine s Beyond Backpacking I d recommend this to anyone contemplating the journey Snatch and Grab useful it works well as an intro and overview of this 2650 mile epicFor someone like me who is planning a thru hike this is the book to start with Berger takes the reader in a folksy only rarely too cutesy voice from the southern terminus to the Canadian border with each short chapter divided into sections of 130 miles or so with a brief overview of that section s highs and lows followed by interesting detail regarding human history wildlife and especially geology LOTS of geology The maps are basic at best and a shortcoming is the lack of visual detail to locate places mentioned in the text But it certainly got me excited about the forthcoming trip and along with Ray Jardine s Beyond Backpacking I d recommend this to anyone contemplating the journey
